Remember Jason Bourne from The Bourne Identity? He had amnesia and consequently lost his identity. When a church gets amnesia, it loses its identity too. How does a church get amnesia? When it loses its understanding and ceases to build its practice in the doctrine of the inspiration of Scripture.

As a church, we build everything we do, or at least intend to build everything we do, on Scripture. In a day and age when those outside the church think truth is relative (except that truth), and those inside the church often sideline Scriptural language and teaching and replace it with what is encouraging or practical to our modern lives, our practice requires an explanation.

The explanation: The Bible is the Inspired Word of God. But what does that mean? How do we know that it is true? And, if it is true, what are the implications?

Most Sundays at Gulf Coast involve the exposition of a particular text of Scripture. That exposition is built on the foundation that “all Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable” (2 Tim. 3:16). This Sunday we are going to pause and examine this foundation. It may be that there are some cracks in the foundation that need repair. This Sunday we will explore the foundation and set out to repair the cracks.

Why is this important? We will explore numerous reasons, but one is that the church that gets this wrong is like a church with amnesia that has lost its identity and is no longer able to be led by the Spirit.
