What is our mission statement as a church? Building a faithful Gospel witness for this generation and the next. This concern with the next generation is not new with us. It has been part of the covenant from the beginning. Abram’s very first encounter with God reveals that God’s covenant and call are always bigger than any one individual.

…all peoples on earth will be blessed through you. (Genesis 12:3)

…To your offspring I will give this land. (Genesis 12:7)

God called Abram for purposes far beyond himself and that would have effect long after him. Likewise, God chose you, that He might reach others through you. His purposes go beyond you, and after you. But how? How will the covenant promises and blessing given to Abraham pass on to Isaac and his seed? That is what Genesis 24 is concerned with. It is a story about betrothal, but that is only the context for a greater story to be told.

How will the covenant promises and blessing given to you and me in the Gospel reach beyond us and carry on after us? In the same way that God, in His steadfast-kindness, ensures that the blessing and promises to Abraham are carried to the next generation. Join us in worship as we learn how from Abraham’s servant sent on a mission, and also from his soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Rebekah.
