Last week we studied Christ’s ascension in Acts 1:9-26. That is the starting point of Christian leadership. When Christ ascended on high he gave gifts to men. And in that he gave some to be leaders in the church to care for the church. God desires for churches to experience maturity, stability, and fruitfulness through care that is extended by gifted leaders with proven character. Elders in the church are particular gifts given to strengthen, nourish, and protect Christ’s flock.
Tomorrow morning we are going to examine the New Testament’s teaching on leadership in the church. We will explore what an elder is, why they lead the church, how the Holy Spirit identifies and chooses elders, and why we “ordain” elders into ministry (and why that matters). When we are finished we together as a body are going to ordain into ministry five elders for Gulf Coast Community Church.
